"This reflective memorial recognizes Ed Johnson, his brutal death and sacrifice, honors the heroic and historic efforts of Noah Parden, Styles Hutchins and the African-American community that supported them, and commemorates the landmark Supreme Court case that changed the course of American history and civil rights. The memorial is a welcoming, contemplative space at the south side to the Walnut Street Bridge where people of all backgrounds and cultures can come to learn, reflect, mourn and find inspiration." African Burying Ground Memorial

"The African Burying Ground Memorial Park was dedicated in 2015 after a 2003 infrastructure project re-discovered the burial ground noted on City maps as late as 1805. The park includes a burial vault containing the remains of 13 individuals, authenticated through forensic DNA testing. The only DNA-authenticated African Burying Ground in all of New England that dates to this era is located at Chestnut Street between Court and State Streets in downtown Portsmouth." portsmouthnh.gov
